Most Kato baby blankets are made in a single piece, crocheted flat, in rows, from the bottom to the top edge.
However, because most of them are made with 7 wpi yarn (bulky yarn), for esthetic reasons tiny details, such as facial details and decorative surface lines, we crochet separately and then sew onto the blanket surface, or we embroider onto the blanket.
It’s also worth mentioning it that Kato blanket patterns ask for crochet color intarsia technique, which means there are numerous yarn ends to take care of and weave in. This is not sewing per se, but some crafters prefer to avoid excessive weaving in and choose crochet projects that require different techniques and approaches.
With larger crochet projects, such as crochet blankets, I brake the crochet color chart apart. I try do do this with as few pieces as possible. For baby blanket patterns, it’s usually four pieces.
I do this for readability purposes. If you are working with a Kato chart, you should to print it out, cut off excess margins and tape or glue chart pages together to make it the whole piece, and then read from an assembled chart.
If I don’t brake the chart in separate pages and put everything on one page, after printing, the image would be very small and you would not be able to read the chart easily.
Kato crochet pattern files are in the PDF format.
To open PDF files, you will need a pdf reader software (such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, Foxit, etc.) installed on your device.
If more than one file is included, they will likely be grouped in an archive (.zip). To access them, you will need to extract the files form the archive. Modern operating systems come with their native extracting functionality, so additional software is not necessary.
